Bishopthorpe, York

A small-scale refurbishment of two bathrooms in Bishopthorpe, York.

Large-format tiles are used across both floors and walls, set to a consistent cill-to-beam-height datum. This tiled zone integrates drainage, valves and discreet concealed lighting, creating a calm and unified architectural approach.

Two free-standing elements — bath and basin — are positioned as objects on the tiled floor. Around the bath, the tiled datum steps down to cill height, forming a generous ledge along its edge. Within the open shower area, the tiles rise to beam height, enclosing the space and accommodating concealed lighting and pipework within thickened walls.

A painted timber cupboard aligns with the upper datum line, providing practical storage for towels etc.
